| Context |
Founded in 1978 the Council on Undergraduate Research, known as CUR, is nationally recognized for its promotion of research in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering by faculty and undergraduate students. Membership in CUR is both individual and institutional and today over 870 colleges and universities are members. CUR describes its mission as follows: The Council on Undergraduate Research promotes research by faculty and undergraduate students in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The colleges, universities, and individuals associated with CUR share a focus on undergraduate education, and a belief that education is best served by faculty-student collaborative research combined with investigative teaching strategies. We also believe that faculty improve their teaching and contribute to society by remaining active in research. Therefore CUR provides avenues for faculty development and helps administrators to improve and assess the research environments of their institutions. With help from corporate, governmental and private sponsors, we provide undergraduate summer fellowships for students to work with their faculty mentors. CUR generates awareness and national support for undergraduate research. We provide information on the importance of undergraduate research to legislatures, governmental agencies, and the trustees and administrators of our institutions. CUR has been instrumental in helping funding agencies craft programs to improve research opportunities for faculty and students at primarily undergraduate colleges. Chronology:See http://www.cur.org/history.html Scope and Content: The CUR archive consists of five series. The first series represents the Councilor's Handbook, a compilation of the critical documents for the organization, particularly the Constitution, Organizational Chart, Strategic Plan, Executive Committee Minutes, Council Members, Membership and miscellaneous documents. The second series includes correspondence and financial reports. The third series contains materials related to the annual meeting and the fourth series is a miscellaneous group of photographs, largely from the 6th National Meeting held in Durham, NC. The fifth series contains the largest body of material, the publications of CUR. Publications include the following: Newsletter - The Council on Undergraduate Research Newsletter, which began in the fall of 1980, was the central publication of the Council on Undergraduate Research. From September of 1989 to May of 1993 it was published four times each year with issues appearing in September, December, March, and May. The Newsletter editor from 1980 to 1993 was Michael P. Doyle, Department of Chemistry, Hope College, Holland, Michigan. Quarterly - The Council on Undergraduate Research QUARTERLY is published in September, December, March, and May. It contains articles and news items relating to undergraduate research, funding sources, letters to the editors, news from inside and outside of CUR, and Divisional and Committee activities.
