| "The Swannanoa in the center of the business part of town, a four storied brick building, keeps up its old and well-deserved reputation." [North Carolina and Its Resources. State Board of Agriculture. Raleigh: Winston. M.I. & J.C. Stewart, Public Printers and Binders, 1896. p.294] | |

| The Swannanoa Hotel was also known as the Earle Hotel and the Berkely Hotel, not to be confused with the later Berkly Hotel . For a brief time it was renamed the "Canaan Hotel" and was included in the silent film the Conquest of Canaan. As can be seen in these two views, considerable remodeling occurred in the building over the years. | |
