GENERAL
HISTORIES & SURVEYS:
General histories and
survey materials have proliferated over the last 20 years and many
excellent sources are available. Most of the recent survey texts address
gender and race issues not found in earlier surveys. Many are
context sensitive. This genre represents a brief sample of familiar
works and makes no attempt to be comprehensive.

AND TECHNIQUE:
This selective list of
"how to" titles provides information on the technical aspects
of art. You may search the SUBJECT catalog for "art
technique*" or "art material*" to locate additional
titles.
MONOGRAPHS,
CATALOGS, CATALOGUE RAISONNES and BOOK SEARCHES:
A study of the work of a single artist or group/movement
of artists. There are many of these available in the library. Look in
the library catalog under the artist's name. Most of the monograph's
contain excellent interpretations of the artist's works and some are
comprehensive in covering the artist's full repetoire, and literature
about the artist (bibliography). A monograph which covers the
breadth of an artist's production is referred to as a catalogue raisonne.

INTERNET RESOURCES:
Searching the
internet can be both rewarding and frustrating. Searches are generally
conducted by using Search Engines . Examples of Search Engines are
GOOGLE -
Use the Google "IMAGES" feature to search specifically for
images. Try the "ADVANCED IMAGE SEARCH" to find images of
specific subject, type, size, and location.

COPYRIGHT ISSUES:
Copyright issues
can be difficult to understand for the novice user of images. Just
because the image is available on the Internet does not give anyone free
use of the image. Most of the images available from the world's museums
are under copyright. The Web sites in this list contain information
regarding copyright guidelines and copyright law.

ART CAREER RESOURCES -
INTERNET:
Many Career
Centers at the larger institutions in this country have excellent pages
which give resources for those seeking careers in the arts. The
directory for University sites can be found through Yahoo http://yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/United_States/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/
Career sites and information on art-related careers have
been developed by university Art Departments and/or by libraries at most
institutions. Search on the homepages or through the resource pages of
the university libraries. UCLA, for example, has developed an excellent
resources page for the arts, as has San Jose State University.
