SEARCH USE THE CUSTOM SEARCH ABOVE. Local history is one of the strengths of the D.H. Ramsey Library Special Collections. When Special Collections was known as the "Southern Highlands Research Center," it identified an area of research that was under-explored. This research area identified by the Center as "Urban Appalachia." It was believed that the urban centers, particularly of the Southern Appalachians, were not fully explored in the literature of the region. Further, the Center and the current Ramsey Library Special Collections believe we have much to learn from a cultural comparison of aspects of life in the Appalachian urban centers with that of life in the rural regions of Appalachia. |
||
| Today, Special Collections still builds on the research interests of the Southern Highlands Research Center and continues to build on its strengths. We also continue to build our collections in the area of urban studies and we seek material that will document the development of urban life in towns and cities such as Asheville, Hendersonville, and other western North Carolina urban centers. | ||
| Information that documents the rise, the decline, and resurgence of the city of Asheville and the surrounding urban centers in western North Carolina an the Southern Appalachians, carries excellent research potential for the many threads the urban centers of the region share in common, as well as those elements that are distinctive to each western North Carolina urban center. Also, the comparative research of the rise of urban centers in the coal-rich mountains of eastern Kentucky against the rise of the travel and tourism industry in western North Carolina is points to the enormous importance of environmental awareness in the sustainability of specific life-styles and economic sustainability. The founding of cities and towns in the rich coal-fields of West Virginia and Kentucky is very different than the founding of cities and towns in the mountains of western North Carolina. |
