The World of the Medieval Scribe
In our modern electronic world the future of the written book is uncertain, but UNC Asheville students have been working on a collaborative project in the Classics and Philosophy departments to preserve the information contained in the laboriously handwritten texts of the Middle Ages. This exhibit showcases their work and documents the opportunities this unique research has opened for their academic future in the Humanities.

Sharing the Chores: Works on Paper by Jonathan Green
An exhibition of hand-drawn lithographs and a hand-pulled serigraph by the renowned artist Jonathan Green is on display from January 14 through February 28 in the Blowers Gallery.  The images portray the importance of shared work, rituals and tradition in the Gullah communities of the South Carolina low country.  A reception will be held Tuesday, February 5, from 6-8pm in the lobby.  Special guest speaker Harry Harrison, Director of the YMI Cultural Center, will begin his talk at 7pm in the gallery.  Exhibit is graciously sponsored by Ramsey Library and the Office of the Chancellor.

Hands, an exhibition of photographs and written "ponderances" by Mary Henderson.

This collection is a black and white study of hands in motion. Ms. Henderson is a local, self-taught photographer and this is her first exhibit. The images ask one to contemplate: "Are our hands like another voice for us? Can we express ourselves without our hands?"
  Bethel: Portraits of a Village, an exhibition of photographs and written observations by B.A. candidate Olivia Korman.

The exhibit documents Korman's experiences with the fascinating inhabitants of Bethel, Nicaragua. She traveled with the group Vision Nicaragua in partial support of her Interdisciplinary Studies senior project, “Documenting Culture,” which incorporates the study of anthropology, literature, language and photography. A reception will be held Friday, May 13, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the gallery.
  Asheville Revisited. April 2005
An exhibition of Asheville scenes and downtown cityscapes in oil, gouache, and pen & ink drawings by local artist Gloria Gaffney.
Gaffney is best known for completing her artwork at the site of inspiration using “en plein air” technique. Among her many accomplishments, the artist recently designed a large scale overhead border for the Biltmore Estate winery, the 2004 Bele Chere festival poster, and multiple posters for the Asheville Lyric Opera. Gaffney teaches painting at the College for Seniors, and exhibits year-round at Kress Emporium.
  Quilts, by Jane Weaver. March 2005.
These quilts reflect Ms. Weaver's love of beautiful fabric and her fascination with geometry. She uses circular and spiral geometries extensively in her work to infuse the disciplined precision of quilting with more improvisational forms.
Currently a resident of Weaverville, the artist freelances, teaches cello, piano and violin from her studio, and fiddles with the contra dance band, Reel Magnolias. Ms. Weaver developed an early interest in this art form while playing under her grandmother's quilt frame as a child in Indiana. After earning a degree in mathematics, she began to experiment with new expressions and geometries in quilting. Press release.

An exhibition of UNCA student photography taken during their summer 2004 Study Abroad (Allan Hantz's "Essentials of Digital Imaging" course) in Perugia, Italy. The photographs commemorate student travels to Sienna, Marmore, Florence, Rome, Gubbio, Assisi, Elba, Venice, Capri, Pisa, and Pompey. Featured images are contributed by Angela Bailiff, Tylea Breaux, Beth Carswell, Charlotte Claypoole, Kristi Havens, Rory Kelly, Courtney McCracken, Dwayne Parton, Jennie Picarella, and Noah Shipani-Trivier.
  The Awakening of Turtle Island: Portraits of Native Americans. November 2004
Artist Tracey Schmidt's exhibition of contemporary photographs and in-depth interview text. Reception featured Ms. Schmidt discussing her experiences developing this Native American exhibit, as well as working with museums and cultural centers. Cherokee / Lakota Elder Amy Walker (subject featured in this exhibit) also discussed her experiences with healing, ceremony, and other native ways of life. "The Awakening of Turtle Island: Portraits of Native Americans," is currently touring Southeastern museums and cultural centers, and received the regional designation award in the Humanities.

An exhibition of textile art by Asheville artist Sarah B. May. She emphasizes color, texture and depth in three-dimensional wall hangings by using a combination of machine and hand stitching techniques, trapunto, applique and embellishment in order to transform commonplace fabrics into artistic works.

An exhibition of portrait paintings, drawings and photographs by Lorelle Bacon and Mickey Buckwalter. Ms. Bacon's paintings and drawings are inspired by Ms. Buckwalter's photography. UNCA Work Study Coordinator Nancy Hofmann shares photographs and paintings created by her grandfather Walter Layman. Layman, an artist and lecturer whose photographs appeared in The National Geographic Magazine, had a special interest in documenting the fast-disappearing way of life of Native Americans. With his canine companion Little Pocahontas, he traveled across the United States photographing members of many different tribes.

Senior BFA candidate Mary Aldrich's rich yet subdued paintings of the female form are introspective and mysterious. Mary says of her work: "These works involve the idea of dreams, fears, vanity, feelings, and most of all self-expression … The figure itself represents the loving, the secret, my personality, and the understanding of myself. My body wrapped or surrounded by drapery has to do with uncovering my spirit and discovering who I am as a person."

Created in 1989, the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography works with photographers, curators, photo editors, and writers to promote documentary photography as an agent for social change. Representative works recently exhibited at FotoFest 2000 in Houston and in previous Mother Jones Award Winner exhibits are represented in this thought provoking and challenging exhibit.

The 7th annual Kituwah celebration comes to the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville for the first time October 13-15, 2000. Kituwah 2000 celebrates the art, heritage and education of Native Americans. The exhibit American Indian Art: Past & Present is produced by the High Country Art & Craft Guild as part of the celebration that will highlight musical performance, story-telling, dance, and lecture.

For their project to document the impact on regional cultures of the construction of Interstate Highway I-26, Rob Amberg and Sam Grey were co-recipients of the 1999 Paul Taylor/Dorthea Lange prize in documentary studies. As the final project for her Masters of Liberal Arts degree at UNCA, Debbie Cross studied the decorative arts of the Lakota Sioux and recreated objects that they would have made and used. To more fully understand the condition of the Lakota, she created each piece in this exhibit under conditions as close to the authentic as was possible.
  Metamorfosi. August - September 1999
In her sculptural wall pieces Nancy Herman explores the themes of rot and decay. She found that they "are not only reminders of our mortality, but in some strange way forced me to notice the beauty of all stages of physicality."

For approximately six years a gallery devoted exclusively to fine photography was located at 32 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville. In regional photographic competitions, its members won awards regularly. The tradition of quality photography established at Gallery F/32 continues here.

  Women's Nests and Vessels of the Spirit. March 1999
Mary Jo Brezny and Margaret Ann Hogue collaborate to present a photographic exhibit of women and their personal spaces. Also on display is an exhibit of unique handmade books and sculptural structures called "vessels of the spirit" by their creator Susan Lightcap.
  Teresa Prater and Suzanne Stryk. February 1999
Two artists are featured. Charcoal drawings are from Teresa Prater's figurative series. The artist is an assistant professor of art at Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Also shown are selected collages from the Natural Domain Series by Suzanne Stryk, a professional artist from Bristol, Virginia.
1998 Life Force at the Anvil. Summer 1998
Tom Joyce organized this exhibit of 115 pieces of forged metal work from areas south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. When you visit Ramsey Library to see these pieces, you will see why Life Force at the Anvil is the perfect name for it.
  Monks. March 1998
Jhierry Lewis has created a meditative environment with eleven monks in various stages of enlightenment. Look closely at the seated figures and you will see that some have been in the lotus position so long that they have grown roots.

  Hiroshige: "Fifty-Three Stages on the Tokaido Highway." January 1998
19th century woodblock prints by Hiroshige, last of the great ukiyo-e masters. The Tokaido Highway stretches from Edo to Kyoto, Japan.

Working primarily in acrylic, oil, and pencil, Gina Canter strives to preserve and honor the memory of her ancestors as well as the Appalachian heritage of the past 200 years.

The Scadin Collection consists of 1200 glass plate negatives, many of Western North Carolina. Prints of these wonderful photographs were on display for all to enjoy.
