| Description | A small 98 page book that describes travel in western North Carolina at the end of the 1880's. It might be described as a booklet, as the size of the item is only 16 cm. in height. The small work intended to be carried by travelers, includes photographs, drawings, and descriptions of the most visited locations in the western region of North Carolina. It represents one of the earliest comprehensive travel guides for the region and is often referred to by travelers during the year surrounding the turn of the century. The narrative itinerary is supplemented by illustrations and photographs of the area. |

| Biography | Thomas H. Lindsey |
| Context | Lindsey and Brown (Thomas H. Lindsey & E. E.
Brown) are listed in the City Directory of Asheville as having a photography
business in 1890 at S.E. Court Plaza. In 1892 they are still listed as
partners in the business. According to information associated with the publication of "Land of the Sky." Thomas H. Lindsey was in Asheville at 57 S. Main as early as 1887. By 1890 he is listed as a partner with E.E. Brown, a relationship that apparently continued until approximately 1896 when he is listed as the sole owner of a photography business at S. Court Square in Asheville. However, reference to the partner, E.E. Brown, missing from photographs after 1893. By 1899 Lindsey had established his business to 14 S. Main, Asheville, which is roughly the same location as S. Court Square, today known as "Pack Square." In 1900 his address was S. Court Square, corner of Main and he calls his business, "Lindsey's Art Parlors." In 1904 he is listed as "Lindsey & Co.", and his location has shifted again, this time to 22 S. Main, in Asheville, an address he retained until 1907. In 1909 he apparently relocated to 18 N. Pack Square [formerly Court Square] and he is listed as "Lindsey and Company." Just who partnered with Lindsey is not known. The "Lindsey & Company" name and address persisted until 1910, at which time no further reference to him is found and it is presumed that his business ceased. Most Lindsey photographs are stamped on the reverse with a wood-engraving stamp of the studio name. His preferred subject is the natural scenery of western North Carolina and his early catalog included in this little booklet, list many of his views by negative number. The cost of these views of western North Carolina were listed as $2.50 per dozen, or .25 cents each.
