Biography  Historian, author, archivist and librarian, Howard H. Peckham, was born in 1910 in Lowell, Michigan. He first attended Olivet College and later transferred to the University of Michigan at the beginning of the Depression. At Michigan he earned a B.A. in English and in 1933 he completed an M.A. in the same field of study. Upon completion of his degree, he married Dorothy Koth, a school teacher and life-long supporter of his intellectual and creative endeavors.

In 1935 Peckham was offered the position of Assistant Curator of Manuscripts and in the same year, he advanced to the position of Curator of Manuscripts at the Clement Library, University of Michigan, a job he held for some ten years. While in this position he created the library Manuscript Division and cultivated a close friendship with Detroit philanthropist Tracy W. McGregor who funded and  supported Peckham's endeavors and helped him build one of the most outstanding collections of Revolutionary War and early Americana documents in the United States.

A true early revolutionary himself, Peckham did not slavishly follow the dictums of traditional archival practice, but sought to raise the level of scholarship in the field. He advocated solid preparation as a historian and as a writer, for those seeking to become archivists. In the beginning he also stood outside traditional historical practice and wrote history to excite the reader. His narrative approach was later endorsed by historians and today is common practice by many historians. He also revised the system for item-level cataloging and was one of the first archivists to teach the skills of archival practice.  His pro-active work for the archival profession resulted in the founding of the Society of American Archivists where Peckham served as a founding member.

Peckham left Michigan in 1945 to become the Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau and Secretary of the Indiana Historical Society, a position he retained until 1953. While in Indiana he engaged in many scholarly pursuits including the publication of his most acknowledged work, Pontiac and the Indian Uprising, (1948). While in Indiana he also founded the national  Society of State and Local History and served as its president until 1954 and also founded American Heritage magazine and served as an editor for many years.

In 1953 the University of Michigan, Clements Library, approached Peckham to fill the vacant post of Library Director and as an associate professor of history. In 1959 he was promoted to full professor of history and continued his highly successful role as a researcher and library director. During his life he produced some 21 monographs and more than double that number of articles. Included among his most notable books while at Michigan, are Captured By Indians (1954),  The War For Independence (1958), The Colonial Wars, 1689-1762 (1964), The Toll of Independence (1974), and The Making of the University of Michigan (1967). Peckham remained at the Clements Library, University of Michigan until 1971, when he retired.

His full retirement to Hendersonville  in 1976 brought Howard Peckham to North Carolina and with him, many of his treasured collections. The University of North Carolina at Asheville was fortunate to be the recipient of  one of his treasured collections, some several hundred first-hand accounts of the World War, 1914-1918. It is this core collection that is selectively itemized below and for which the University of North Carolina gratefully acknowledges Mr. Peckham and his family's generosity and thoughtfulness.

Howard H. Peckham died July 6, 1995 in Hendersonville, NC of complications related to diabetes and Parkinson's disease. He was 84 years old.
