| Description |
A collection of tunes on DVD disc
recorded by Roger Howell in October of 2007 in his studio on Banjo Branch,
in Madison County, near Mars Hill, N.C. These tunes represent a range of
musical repertoires. As interpreted by Roger Howell, the tunes include his
version, those of other musicians, and arrangements that are unique to the
particular repertoire. Many of the tunes are rare and have seldom been
heard or recorded in any formal manner. Howell notes that the unique
nature of this music prompted him to record this collection and to make it
available to the public through several repositories in North Carolina,
including UNCA's Special Collections. |

Biography of Roger
Howell Roger Howell has had a life-long passion for
mountain music, having grown up near Mars Hill, on Banjo Branch,
surrounded by the music of elderly neighbors who played traditional
banjo and fiddle tunes like generations before them.
His first instrument was the guitar at age 10,
with the banjo coming a bit later and eventually the fiddle in his
mid-teens, Roger was strongly influenced by the music of Flatt &
Scruggs, Porter Wagoner, the
Stonemans,
and the popular Grand Old Opry radio shows. He also
developed a keen interest in the regional mountain music of the Madison County
area, picking up licks and developing his fluid fiddle style from mentors like Tommy Hunter & Woodrow Boone. His
interested soon turned to the period music of the 70's on guitar, but he took a serious turn back to
traditional mountain music in the 80's, when it
appeared that the local music may fade
away with the passing of it's older generation.
Roger became a consummate professional on "frailing"
banjo, and was the first person to win the
prestigious Georgia State Championship on old-time banjo at the
Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee,
Ga. His fiddle style was developed through his friendship with some of
the great local and regional
fiddlers, such as Vernon
Riddle, Mack Snodderly, Arvil Freeman, Gordon Freeman, and Marvin
Faulkner, among many others. He
teamed up with local fiddler & friend Doug Phillips to record a
ground-breaking album "Blue Ridge Mountain Music" in 1991. Later,
Roger was asked to join the legendary "Carroll Best
String Band"
on fiddle and was introduced to the
festival and concert stage, where he met and became
friends with perhaps his greatest
influences John Hartford, Fletcher Bright, Benny Sims, and
Charlie ~Acuff. Since then, Roger's talent has led him
to the recording studio, appearing on no less than 26 albums
for other regional acts, or producing
his own acclaimed recordings. The 2003 CD "Hills & Heroes"
continues to be a best-seller,
and is a showcase for Roger's multi-instrumental talents.
Through the years, Roger has continued
to perfect his unique bowing style and has been called a "walking
encyclopedia" of fiddle tunes, collecting hundreds of scarce regional
tunes, as well as many from the "old school" of early country
performers, from his working association with his late friend Ernest
Smith, son of
legendary
Grand Old Opry personality "Fiddlin' Arthur Smith." Roger has led
several successful bands,
and has won many top awards in regional contest, including
the NC Mountain State Fair, Fiddler's Grove Festival, and many
others. He is a highly-regarded session musician and has worked behind
the scenes for several regional music festivals, including Mountain
Dance & Folk Festival in Asheville, and the Bascom
Lamar
Lunsford Festival
at Mars Hill College. His writing skills also won him the prestigious
Willie Parker Peace Award from the NC Society of Historians
for his part in the publication "Along About
which
chronicled the history of Asheville's "Shindig-on-the-Green."
Roger and his fiddle have even appeared in a couple of films,
"Songcatcher," and "Rank Strangers — The Music of
Mrs.
Hyatt's Oprahouse. "
Roger has also produced and documented many field recordings
of local fiddlers, including over 150 tunes
from the late Madison County fiddler Woodrow Boone, many of which
he later published on two recordings. Roger's music is sold
nationwide, and his recordings are popular with fiddle fans and devotees
near and far. These days, his time is
spent repairing and restoring violins, which are noted for their
remarkable tone and easy playing
qualities. Though currently not leading a steady band, Roger continues
to be a fixture and many local festivals and jam sessions, as
well as a highly-regarded historian & collector of unusual fiddle tunes.
His knowledge and music has been sought out by collectors worldwide,
especially by scholars from Scotland and the British Isles. Roger is presently
recording his "Memory Collection" of
over 300 fiddle tunes, which are to be donated to The Appalachian Archives
at the Ramsey Center, Mars Hill College in the Fall of 2007. |

It is my hope that students of
the fiddle will learn these tunes and continue the legacy of traditional
mountain fiddling. These tunes were taken from a variety of sources
over the past 50 years of my musical experiences - - - from hearing &
learning many of them first-hand from the old fiddlers in this region,
from the many fiddling acquaintances I’ve made over the years as a
professional performer, as well as the many recorded sources such as
old 78 rpm records, reissued albums of the old 78’s, and more
contemporary recordings of fiddlers from across the country. While the
tunes in this collection represent a vast repertoire of music, they may
not necessarily be definitive versions, but rather my own
interpretations, versions, or arrangements of tunes heard elsewhere.
However, some of the tunes herein are very rare, and will be heard
nowhere else, and were indeed a major reason for this project. I
dedicate this project to the many old fiddlers who selflessly shared
their tunes and friendship with me over the years.
The tunes in this collection
were recorded in many different sessions, when I found the time to do
so, and represent different moods, recording conditions, and other
physical limitations of the day. Therefore, most will not be of a
“studio quality”, but rather more in line with the quality of “field
recordings”. This should nevertheless suffice for learning purposes,
and it is my sincere hope that you will find many tunes in interest in
this effort to preserve these tunes for future generations. I hope you
love these tunes as much as I did in recording them. Always remember to
play them with pride, and please remember their heritage.
