Description Scope and Content:

The materials in the YWCA Collection consist of miscellaneous administrative files, Board minutes, annual reports, photographic materials, newspaper scrapbooks and clippings, and other organized series. The materials span the dates 1907 to 1998, with most items dating from the 1920s and later. The collection documents the history of the Asheville YWCA and the segregated Phyllis Wheatley Branch of the YWCA. It  reflects the organization's dedication to public service and resilience in the face of financial adversity. Also included is information relating to the YWCA's Moorhead House, a home for working girls, and  the early history related to the Phyllis Wheatley Branch and its later incorporation into the larger Asheville YWCA.

Additional donations of material have substantially augmented the holdings and contain materials from the early years of the Phyllis Wheatley Branch and fill in gaps in the history of the integration of the two YWCA facilities and their activities. The administrative history of the Asheville YWCA and the Phyllis Wheatley Branch is relatively complete. Of particular interest to researchers is the documented process of moving the segregated YWCA institutions together in the 1970's. The Asheville YWCA was the first YWCA in the south to successfully integrate its facilities.
