| Description | A small group of booklets, reprints, photocopy images, and correspondence related to the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the turn of the century. Included is a chronology of the development of the park and a narrative chronicling the involvement of Chase Ambler in the development of the national park. Five photocopy images of the area near "Rattlesnake Lodge" summer home of the Ambler family and other views of the mountains are included. The correspondence contains information on the park and on the Ambler family. |

| BIOGRAPHY | Dr. Chase P. Ambler was a physician in
western North Carolina who came to the area early in his life and
remained a staunch supporter of the natural environment of the region.
He is generally credited with the initial efforts to establish the Great
Smoky Mountains as a National Park. It is told that he was inspired to
make the establishment of the Park his life work when he went fishing
with his friend Judge Day to the Sapphire country in western North
Carolina and while roughing it in wilderness he began to formulate plans
that he later pushed forward for the establishment of the Park.
The earliest efforts toward the establishment of the park were taken through the Asheville Board of Trade committee, which Dr. Ambler chaired. This committee called for the creation of |
