Dear “Mouse Fred”,

Have you ever been so full of gratitude that you couldn’t do anything about it, or say anything? Well, I am that way now. It was wonderful of you to send the (check), rather to telegraph the money. I knew you would, and the minute I sent that letter, my heart felt lighter, because I knew that help was on the way. I would telegraph you, but I don’t know your address. Anyway, what could I say in a telegraph!

Herbie is very slightly improved and the doctors are planning more transfusions. He's had three now, but he is in such a weakened condition that they can give very small amounts at a time.

I wish I could talk to you and tell you all about it, but it’s a mysterious thing to me and quite beyond my understanding and therefore impossible to write. I’ll send you a line (writing above line), however, for I’m sure you’ll be interested.

With a heart full of gratitude and affection. I am.

As ever,

Lucy Scott Root
