Description Eleven letters of correspondence from Mrs. Herbert Root to and from Fred L. Seely. The letters are of a personal nature and pertain to the death of Mr. Herbert Root in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Root's subsequent move back to Asheville, where she ran a boarding house business. In the letters, Mrs. Root mentions the Appalachian School at Penland, NC, Miss Vance, Miss Yale, and Miss Hawley. The letters also indicate two instances of poor physical health for Fred Seely.

001 001 016 1. July 22, year unknown. Part 1. This is the earliest letter in the series. Mrs. Root writes a casual letter to Mr. Seely detailing her daily affairs and fond memories of the Grove Park Inn. [typed version compiled by Special Collections staff]
    017 part 2. Mrs. Root talks about her life with Herbert Root, her husband, in Pittsburgh, PA. 
    018 part 3. She discusses living in Pittsburgh, PA.
    019 part 4. She mentions Mr. Seely's recent visit to Battle Creek and inquires about his health.
    012 2. April 2, 1933. Mrs. Root writes Mr. Seely to notify him of Mr. Herbert Root's failing physical health and to ask him for financial assistance with the hospital bills. [typed version]
    013 Part 2. In this early letter, Mrs. Root describes Herbert's condition as "pernicious anemia" and provides background information.
    014 Part 3. Mr. Herbert Root had been sick since Christmas, according to Mrs. Root, and he was now undergoing multiple blood transfusions.
    015 Part 4, 1933. Mrs. Root discusses the "difficult times" and understands if Mr. Seely cannot financially help. 
    011 3. Letter, not dated post-April, 1933. Letter of gratitude from Mrs. Root to Mr. Seely for his financial contribution. [typed version]
    009 4. Letter, not dated. Written on stationary from Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Mrs. Root is writing Mr. Seely regarding her husband's condition. In this letter, she excitedly states her husband is recovering slightly after having eight blood transfusions. [typed version]
    010 2nd part of letter. The donors for the transfusion are fellow workers of Mr. Root from the Telephone Company. The doctors are also helping despite lack of payment.
    007 5. May 13, 1933. Part 1. Mrs. Root refers to a previous letter from Mr. Seely (which is missing from the collection). At this time, Herbert's health is recovering steadily. [typed version]
    008 2nd part of letter. Mrs. Root mentions a recent visit from Joy Hawley and discussion of Mr. Seely's sinus condition. Mrs. Root recommends Dr. Warren Davis.
    006 6. July 5, 1933. Telegram from Ethel Gurney to Fred Seely declaring Mr. Herbert Root's death that morning at 11:00 a.m.
    005 7. July 6, 1933. Letter of sympathy to Mrs. Root over the recent death of her husband.
    004 8. March 13, 1934. Mrs. Root writes Mr. Seely about a recent visit. She mentions being with Miss Vance and Miss Yale. She talks about her sons and the recent loss of her husband. [typed version]
    003 9. June 28, 1941. Letter written on stationary labeled 268 Chestnut Street, Asheville, North Carolina. Mrs. Root discusses plans to send her sons to Appalachian School at Penland, NC.
    001 10. December 3, 1941. Letter written on stationary labeled 268 Chestnut Street, Asheville, North Carolina. Mrs. Root discusses the failure of her recent boarding house business. She offers her clerical services to Mr. Seely, if he is in need of help. She also discusses her sons.
    002 11. December 5, 1941. Letter of response from Mr. Seely to Mrs. Root informing her that he just got back in the office and he will get his "bearings" in a few days. Mr. Seely provides positive comforting remarks to Mrs. Root.
