Description Various letters of correspondence from Chalotte L. Yale and Eleanor Vance, founders of the Biltmore Estate Industries to and from Fred L. Seely and interested parties regarding the development and maintenance of Tryon Toy-Makers and Weavers in Tryon, NC. Correspondence covers the year1921 and is useful in building a history of the Toy-Makers as well as craft industries in western North Carolina.

1   0001 January 10, 1924. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Miss Ruth. Details shipment of 6 desks and 12 Roadsters and 4 Trucks from former order. Notes the training of a new cabinet maker. 
    0002 February 8, 1924. Letter from Mary E. Lindsey to Grove Park Inn. Inquiry regarding invoice o 1/10.24 for 4 trucks at .75 cents each, part of a shipment of one dozen. Notes that their stock was depleted at Christmas and they are having difficulty staying on top of orders. 
    00003 March 11, 1924. Letter from Grove Park Inn to Charlotte L. Yale. Notification of mailing of toys that need repair.

March 18, 1924. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Miss Ruth acknowledging receipt of broken toys and discussing the remedy for broken items. Discusses the economics of the construction of tops and suggests that "fillers" were to blame for disrepair. Notes that Wayne Creaseman left their shop. Says the village [Tryon] is full of tourists. "What a pity we do not have a good hotel!"


    0005 June 30, 1024. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Miss Ruth. "We are sending by P. Post on approval, one of our new toys - The Trapeze Rabbits - which retail at $2.00 each and $18.00 per doz. to you." Notes new designs upcoming and wonders if they may be sent when completed.
    0006 July 25, 1924. Letter from Mary E. Lindsey to Miss Ruth Hatch, Grove Park Inn. Revises the cost of the 'Trapeze Rabbits' and provides a corrected statement for the order that was sent July 7th.

September 17, 1924. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Miss Ruth. "We want to thank you for sending to us Mrs. J.B. Taylor [a buyer] some time ago. We found her and her sister perfectly delightful." Thanks for the various orders and an invitation to visit Tryon.

October 25, 1924. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Mr. Seely. 'I want to tell you of a wonderful thing which has come to us. We have just received a gift of three acres of beautiful woodland facing the Highway, - a valuable piece of land  - and right in the center of things, - the only unspoiled piece around Tryon which is on the paved Highway were all motors pass going either to Asheville or Spartenburg. We are going to build a shop facing the highway and a little home on the crest of the hill above, overlooking the shop and guarding it...." Describes the original shop and home and current craft endeavors. Tells of making mantels and doors for homes in the area. Tells of visit by Colburns and Mrs. Vanderbilt

    0010 October 31, 1924.Letter from Mary E. Lindsey to Grove Park Inn. "Thank you so much for your order 4552. We have shipped..."

November 25, 1924. Letter from Charlotte Yale to Fred Seely. "A few days ago we sent for some samples of Overcoat Homespun for a patron to take home to his tailor.... we have never seen anything so beautiful..." Notes that their shop has sold a lot of Biltmore Homespun for Seely and that they expect another good season. Notes receipt of Miss Julia's wedding announcement and regret that she will be leaving Seely's employment. 

    0012 November 27, 1924.Letter from [Seely] to Miss Charlotte L. Yale. "You don't know how I appreciate your letter. It is all too generous but is the sweeter coming from you. Wonders if Mrs. Vaiden has been with them and that she wants to carry toys  "at her shop in Augusta".
