| Description | Eliada Home for Children began in 1903 in a small rural log cabin about four miles from Asheville, North Carolina in what is today known as Leicester, NC. The founder of the home, Lucius Bunyan Compton founded Eliada, which means, "One whom God cares for," to provide an educational experience for youth. The early school was incorporated in 1906 and was called Eliada Home and expanded its mission to include a social service for unwed mothers and their children. Eliada Home Archive is
a large collection of material that is related to the founding and
operation of the home spanning the years 1903 to the present. There are
over 8,000 photographs and numerous publications related to the
institution. Correspondence, financial records, and program information
makes up the bulk of the manuscript documents. Over 200 printing blocks
for duo-tone images are also included in the collection and span the
years from approximately 1920's to the present.
