| Description | The New Testament Christian newsletter
belongs to the Eliada Homes Archive. Eliada Homes began as a
non-denominational Christian home for unwed mothers and, later, grew
into an orphanage for children in Southern Appalachia. Lucius
Compton, the founder of Eliada Homes and first editor of the New
Testament Christian, describes the newsletter's
title in the first issue. He states that workers and volunteers at Eliada Homes "stand on the
principles of New Testament Christianity, in that they hold out
helping hands to the unfortunate girls and to the homeless destitute
children without distinction as to faith or creed" (Vol. 1, 1).
Self-published on the campus of Eliada Homes, the monthly newsletter described to friends and contributors the various activities related to Eliada Homes for each specific month. Topics covered included volunteers and employees' biographies, children activities, new additions to the home, new members of the residence, community donations, fundraisers, camp meetings, and editorials. Later issues included lists of children's birthdays with an accompanying photograph and brief biography of each birthday child. Following the mission statement of Eliada Homes and Faith Cottage, the newsletter always included a devotional comment, testament of faith, witness, or prayer. The first New Testament Christian was first published January 20, 1909. UNCA Special Collections retains copies of newsletters ranging from 1909 to 1975 in the Eliada Homes Archive. Only one issue is selected here. |
