Historical Note

Amercian Enka was established in the Hominy Valley, near Asheville NC, in 1928, by the Netherlands Artificial Silk Company, and the plant became one of the leading producers of rayon in the US. In 1970, Akzona Inc. was created by combining American Enka with the International Salt Company and Organon Inc., with other companies being added later. In 1982 Akzona Inc. merged with Akzo, Akzona's majority shareholder.

Scope and Contents

The collection is believed to comprise two donations. The first donation was by J K MacKendree Day, former General Counsel and Vice-President of Human Resources for Akzona, and comprised directories, organizational memos, photographs, and an historical overview. A second donation is also thought to have been made by Francella Poston, widow of Ray Poston, former General Counsel of Akzona, and comprised photographs and other materials.

Taken together, the materials provide details of the history, and personnel, of American Enka and Akzona, and the the Akzona Building in Asheville NC, particularly during the 1980's and 1990's.
