OVERVIEW:

The Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville is the public body and the body corporate and politic that incorporated on August 26, 1958.  In the Resolution of the City of Asheville, Section 6, the following statement is made:

"The said Urban Redevelopment Comission when it reveives a chartr from the Secretary of State shall be and become a distinct body corporate and politic to be known as the "Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville."

On March 18, 1960 Lee Bessette, Chairman of the Commission recommended that the Certificate of Incorporation be amended in order to avoid confusion and to read:

Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville instead of Urban Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville.

The Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville is the earliest urban renewal agency in the city and later came to be known as the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville (HACA).
