| Description |
This booklet spotlights the major achievements in Asheville’s urban renewal project in 1970. Continuing where 1969’s pamphlet left off, the 1970 booklet records the completion of the YMCA, First Baptist Youth Center, Sheraton Motor Inn, and Buncombe County Health and Welfare Building. Updates are given about plans for the David Millard Junior High School property and other parcels of land. In addition, by the end of 1970, 65% of the property to be acquired in the East Riverside Project had been optioned. The Relocation Department had resettled 370 families and individuals and 6 businesses. 64 homes were rehabilitated, and the first parcels of land were sold in the project area. |

Honorable Mayor and City Council City of Asheville CIVIC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT N. C. R-13 The progress which is visible in the Civic Redevelopment Project N. C. R-13 marks 1970 as the year of five giant steps forward for the Redevelopment Commission of the City of Asheville. (1) May 25, 1970 was opening day for the YMCA. This imposing structure is a big lift to the downtown area, and its programs are proving of great interest to all ages.(2) On August 23, 1970 the doors of the First Baptist Youth Building were opened. A beautiful addition to the existing structure, making the original building look new.(3) On October 5, 1970 Sheraton Motor Inn opened its doors with 150 beautiful guest rooms, and an already "talk of the town" lounge and restaurant.(4) November 16, 1970 the new Buncombe County Health and Welfare Building, completed ahead of schedule, began receiving its tenants. It is a definite architectural enhancement to the area.(5) An amendment to the project now awaiting final HUD approval will give us the green light to purchase David Millard Junior High School, and changes the reuse of Parcel 16, the Civic Arts Center Site, to business, and the David Millard Junior High School, as well as Parcel 8, also to business use.We are presently advertising for sale Parcel 20 (the old YMCA site). Very strong interest has been received to construct a High Rise Convention Motor Hotel. Bid opening date is December 18, and at least two bids are expected. A facility of this caliber on that site leaves us in an excellent position to market Parcels 16 and 30, as well as other sites, to good commercial use. |

EAST RIVERSIDE PROJECT N. C. R-48 The East Riverside Urban Renewal Project N. C. R-48 is at the end of its second full year in the execution stage, and is progressing on schedule. To date 65% of the properties to be acquired have been optioned at an expenditure of $2,958,805, and of this, $2,427,900 has been purchased. The Relocation Department is keeping up with the pace of acquisition, and has relocated 370 families and individuals in private sales, private rentals and public housing. Six business concerns have been relocated. There have been 64 homes rehabilitated to the minimum property standards in the project area. The Rehabilitation Department has increased its workload, and hopefully this number will be doubled in 1971. There has been an effort to attract additional contractors which will certainly be advantageous to the Rehabilitation Department and residents in the East Riverside area. On November 5, 1970 the Redevelopment Commission received bids for the sale of two residential lots in the East Riverside Project. This is the first property to be sold in the project area, and it is hoped that many more residential lots can be offered for sale in 1971. Very truly yours, Luther Thigpen, Chairman |
