jarr032 "Mayor for Hazel. Meeting Held Last Night and Ticket Nominated -- A meeting of the citizens of Hazel, immediately west of Asheville, was held Wednesday, for the purpose of nominating a municipal ticket for that town. J.M. Jarrett declined to run on the ticket put out several days since and published in THE CITIZEN, saying that as he was a democrat he could not run on a ticket having other than democrats on it. The ticket referred to was composed of J.M. Jarrett, for mayor ; E.H. Britt, C.M. Worley and Larkin Smith for aldermen. It was agreed to withdraw this ticket and abide by the decision of the meeting.

The following named ticket was then put in regular nomination: For mayor, John M. Ledford: for aldermen, D.J. McLellan, E.H. Britt and J.W. Cockrum. The latter was nominated on the fourth ballot." Asheville Weekly Citizen, April 23, 1891.

jarr033 Asheville Daily Citizen  [March 31] 1891. "Hear the News From West Asheville -- Election Coming - WEST ASHEVILLE, N.C., March 30, 1891. -- A large meeting of the citizens of this progressive new town was held at Col. J.M. Jarrett's store, on Saturday. Col. F. Reynolds was called to the chair and N. Plamondon to act as secretary. Capt. Natt Atkinson explained the object of the meeting, and stated that he owned a charter to build a street railway from Asheville to the Sulphur Springs hotel. His plan is as follows: That the town of West Asheville vote a subscription of $30,000 to build a street railway through the main avenue of the town as above named, to be paid in thirty year 6 per cent bonds on the condition that the town is to have a first mortgage lien on the road to secure the town against the interest and principal of said bond. Further, that the town bind the stockholders of the company to be responsible for the interest and principal of said bond that the town issue in payment of their stock.

On motion a petition was drawn and enough signed to justify the town commissioners to order an election in May next.

Capt. Atkinson made a motion that the town issue $25,000 for improving the streets, which was seconded by B.G. Caner and all present.

An election will be held in May to elect a mayor and five town commissioners to serve for the next term.  March 31, 1891.

jarr034 "Tuesday Evening May 8, 1894, Asheville Daily Citizen,  'The Reformers Win' The Mayor Gets a Re-election. With him the entire Reform Ticket gets in by a good ?  Bond Proposition, ?? Pearson's Campaign Expense.  253 "Lest there should be some who do not yet fully understand the meaning of those three figures it should be stated that they represent the vote by which the Democratic ticket was defeated in the municipal contest yesterday.

Thomas Walton Patton was re-elected Mayor of Asheville for a year and carried with him Henry Redwood, Wm. A. Blair and Fred A. Hull, the Aldermen on the Reform ticket.

The Democrats realized in the afternoon that the "goose was cooked," and only waited to hear the majority. The full vote by wards for the various candidates and on the funding bond proposition was as follows, as announced by Chairman West at the First ward polls last night:  [poll result follow]

When the result had been announced there were loud calls for the mayor, who  in response thanked the Reformers from the bottom of this heart for what they had done for him; reasserted his belief in the virtue of a business administration of a city's affairs, and then told all to go home and get a good night's rest, which all needed after the day's hard work.

It will be seen by the figures that the mayor led the Reform ticket, while Mr. Sevier led the Democratic ticket. The funding bond proposition needed 1016 votes to carry, but received 1713 and would have received a larger vote if there had been workers for it at the polls during the entire day. Of the registered vote 92 1/2 percent, was polled.

The crowd on the streets was unusually small and quiet last night.

It having been rumored about the streets that Richmond Pearson had put money, generally said to be $1000, into the Reform campaign yesterday, and the rumor having come to the ears of Mr. Pearson, he came to THE CITIZEN  office today and made a statement of his actual expense, as follows: $10 subscription to campaign fund: $17.25 for blue ribbons ; 5 cents for two glasses of lemonade for himself and Wiley Shook ; total, $27.30.

The newly elected officials will be inducted into office on the third Monday in May at noon.
