The collection was gathered as part of an exhibition of Southern Appalachian Writers held at UNCA in the early 1980's and sponsored by D. H. Ramsey Library and the Southern Highlands Research Center.

Biography A native of Asheville, NC, Patricia Duane Beaver was born on 14 September 1948.  She attended Duke University, earning her BA in Anthropology in 1970.  Beaver remained at Duke to complete her Ph. D.  She has been an instructor in the anthropology departments at the universities of Duke, North Carolina State, and Appalachian State.  As an anthropologist, Beaver is a recognized authority on the Appalachian South, having written extensively on the topic.  Beaver currently serves as the director of The Center for Appalachian Studies at ASU.
