Description Collection contains letters of correspondence, ephemera, photographs, book covers, and anecdotal information on the writer. In some instances, tapes of the author reading from their work is included.

The collection was gathered as part of an exhibition of Southern Appalachian Writers held at UNCA in the early 1980's and sponsored by D. H. Ramsey Library and the Southern Highlands Research Center.

Biography

Born in Camilla, Georgia in 1944, Kathryn Stripling Byer attended Wesleyan College before going on to earn her M.F.A. from UNC-Greensboro in 1968. She relocated to the North Carolina mountains around this time. Byer served as Poet-in-Residence at Western Carolina University throughout the bulk of the 1990s and published several books of poetry. Throughout her career, she has received wide acclaim and honors, including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988 and becoming, in 2005, the first female Poet Laureate of North Carolina.
