Statement on Writing "I write in order to address, to redress where possible, and to offer and gain some respite from the cruelties and injustices of these times.  These are not such large ambitions as one might think.  Disaster is universal, as indifference to it is; and any effort, no matter how inconsequential, against disaster now stands as genuine."
Biography

Born in Canton, North Carolina in 1936, Fred Chappell studied at Duke University, earning both a BA and MA.  For the forty years between 1964 and his retirement in 2004, Chappell taught literature and creative writing and UNC-Greensboro.  In a literary career spanning those four decades, Chappell published numerous works of fiction, poetry, and criticism.  He has been awarded a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Prix de Meilleur des Lettres Etrangeres from the French Academy, and the T.S. Eliot Prize.
