| Statement on Writing | "Any serious writer of fiction would agree with John Gardner's remark that 'The best effect of the best fiction is to humanize,' unless the writer is engaged in turning our science fiction or other works which do not demand human responses or perceptions. For the serious writer, one who works at his madness every day, the creation of fictional humans takes an immense stamina, an enormous amount of time, a supreme devotion. Language is his only instrument, his only weapon." -- Vera Cleaver. | |||
| Biography | Born in Virgil, South Dakota, Cleaver and her husband, Bill, collaborated until his death in 1981. Together, they produced more than a dozen novels for young adults. Their subject matter reveals a particular interest in mountain children who have both physical and mental problems. The Cleavers were three times nominated for the National Book Award, and their novels made multiple appearances on the American Library Associations list of "Notable Books." Settings often mirror the Cleavers' place of residence. | |||
