| Biography |
Olive Tilford Dargan was born in Kentucky in 1869.
Though an extensive traveler, Dargan made her home in the mountains of
North Carolina—first from 1915 to 1923 on the farm she and her husband
had purchased in Swain County, and then in Asheville from 1925 until the
end of her life in 1968. In addition to numerous books of poetry and
verse drama, Dargan also wrote fiction and nonfiction set in and about
the Appalachians. She pseudonymously authored a cycle of proletarian
novels about American labor strikes, the first two of which take place
in Gastonia, North Carolina. Her final collection of poetry, The
Spotted Hawk, won both the Thomas Wolfe and Roanoke-Chowan Award for
Poetry. |
