| Statement on writing |
"It has been
particularly rewarding for me to write about the mountain people for
they seem to have more humor in them than do most others, and more
pride. Sometimes I have seen them standing in a field or alongside
a road looking off at the horizon, as if listening to voices indistinct,
to some far, forgotten reminders of an unremembered country, of another
time, of an ancestry obscure. It is a pleasure to write about
them, and to try to listen with them." |
| Biography |
John Ehle, born 1924, grew up in Asheville, North
Carolina before heading off the UNC-Chapel Hill for his undergraduate
and graduate degrees. Ehle seemed to have two careers running
simultaneously: he published extensively from the 1950s through the
1980s while also accomplishing much for the public good—most notably
helping create the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Governor’s
School while working for Former Governor Terry Sandford. Though
primarily remembered by the mainstream for his works of regional
history, Ehle’s novels are equally as powerful. His novel The Land
Breakers won the Sir Walter Raleigh award upon its publication in
1964. In recent years, his novel The Road was selected as part
of the WNC Together We Read program. |
