| Statement on writing |
"I regard poetry as a
means of recover and discovery--recovery of the world around me, and
discovery of the world within me.... I never truly know what I
think or believe until I have wrestled the idea or the feeling into
verbal expression. Brought up in Appalachia, I have been most
influenced by the people and places of my childhood, some of which I
spent in the Reems Creek region.... In composing 'mountain'
material I often work with remembered tunes or compose a melody to
accompany the ballad. But I feel the poet should stand on his own
ground and look with his own eyes and speak with his own voice, yet be
always aware that he is moving into the unknown--which, however or
whatever it is, he is seeking to discover and sea with his own poetic
design." |
| Biography |
Though born in
Florida, Francis Pledger Hulme spent his childhood in Buncombe County,
North Carolina. He attended Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill,
Emory University, and the University of Minnesota, where he attained his
Ph.D. His primary career was as a literature teacher, where he
taught at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, though he also was a
professional violinist and drama critic. In his poetry--of which,
three collected volumes were published--he sought to establish solid relationships between the mind's
ventures and the less volatile earth underfoot. |
