| The size of the portraits is generally 16" x 20" ", though some are larger. | ||||
| About charcoal portraits: This particular portrait type was created by retouching photographs with either crayon or charcoal. The practice was in vogue from approximately 1890 to 1910. Generally an enlargement of an earlier photograph was made by the artist and it was then enhanced by retouching with several media including charcoal, crayon, pen and ink, and sometimes watercolor. When portraits were made by camera the process often took several minutes and any movement, such as the eyes, would create a blurred image. The following portraits demonstrate many of the techniques. | ||||
