| Description | A collection of fragments and single items, many removed from original early serials publications and ephemeral publications often used for travel and tourism promotion in western North Carolina and the surrounding region. Some illustrations from Harper's Magazine, Appleton's and other early periodicals have been hand-colored through intervention by the previous owner. Normally the items would be colorless. Maps of coastal North Carolina and Civil War maps are also included in this eclectic body of material. The illustrations and photographs capture some of the visual history of the most visited and familiar of western North Carolina's landmarks and include such well-known illustrators as Henry Fenn, Sol Eytinge, Mary L. Stone, Wordsworth Thompson [ A. W. Thompson] , W. A. Rogers, C. S. Reinhart, and others. Some articles are partial and are gathered in this collection for their illustrations, and not for their textual integrity. |

classes of whites, impoverished by the war, and some phases of negro
character. ..."

HARPER'S WEEKLY. page 621, September 28,
1867. "Registration at the South -- Scene at Asheville, North
Carolina. -- [Sketched by A.W. Thompson.] REGISTRATION SCENES. "We give on this page one of the scenes lately made familiar in the South -- a registration, not an election, scene. The late slaves of the South have exhibited unusual interest in the work of registration, their first necessary step toward securing the privilege of suffrage which they estimate so so highly. Our sketch was made from an actual scene in the little mountain town of Asheville, North Carolina, but it will as well apply to all parts of the South. The work of registration has been going on for several months past,
and has completed in several of the States ; and the result shows
that in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas the colored voters are in
the majority, and, being united in opinion and policy, can easily
control the elections in those States. The white majority in Virginia is
not great ; in North Carolina it promises to be less ; and South
Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, and Mississippi will probably be controlled
by the colored vote; so that in all probability the colored voters, even
without the assistance of the loyal whites, will carry in the
approaching State, as well as in future national contests, eight out of
the ten unconstructed States. |
