Description A small collection of genealogical material from the James Hamilton Tweed family.  The Tweeds established residency in the Cane Creek valley in Buncombe County, North Carolina, early in the nineteenth century and followed the path taken by many European immigrants to the rapidly developing western frontier. Thomas Tweed and Jane Henry Tweed, grandparents of James Hamilton Tweed, emigrated from Ireland to America around  1819, landing at the Charleston, South Carolina port. After brief sojourns in South Carolina and possibly other locations, the couple settled in the Cane Creek area of western North Carolina. The couple had seven children. Only one child, Samuel, married, according to notes in the family bible.  Samuel married Jane Hamilton, of South Carolina and they had nine children. It is this family legacy that shapes the material found in this collection. Included are photographs, legal documents, deeds, letters, and ephemera. At present, the materials in this collection are retained by various family members. They are represented here as a "virtual collection" of digital surrogates, to be shared with those who have an interest in the Tweed family, early history of Buncombe County, pioneer settlement, westward expansion, farming practice, immigration, and a myriad of other early nineteenth century interests.
