Biography |
Karen Vaneman retired (with spouse Gerald L. Vaneman) to Asheville in 2001 after decades of teaching, mostly at the college level, in Michigan. Her formal education includes a Ph.D. in English from Wayne State University, M.A. in English from Ohio State and an B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. Vaneman enrolled as a part-time student at UNCA, taking an Urban Politics course with Dr. Dolly Mullen and then Dr. Sarah Judson's course on African-American History from 1865. These courses began Mrs. Vaneman's journey combining the stories of African-Americans in Asheville, living during the the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. "I found that the communities that were destroyed in the name of urban renewal indeed had a life of their own; they were living organisms whose people formed the veins and arteries of their communities, indeed the lifeblood of these communities. The voices here represent only a small fraction of the people whose lives were dramatically altered when their communities were torn apart, and we should remember their stories. Indeed I have learned much from meeting these strong and giving people and hearing their stories." |
