Description |
Robyn Cape describes city council as a representative arm of citizens in the voice of government. Council members are elected representatives. The focus of a council member is on researching and understanding the complexity of the issues and looking out for all the interests in the community, i.e. the positive growth of the community rather than likes and dislikes of individuals. For example, the council must be careful to understand differences between legal requirements, infrastructure sustainability measures, aesthetics, and management of natural resources. Robin speaks of the importance of legislative representation, regional partnerships, and quality utilization of resources in planning for Asheville's development and growth. Additional issues discussed are community spirit and involvement, neighborhoods, zoning codes, segregation and integration, energy and climate (including food and transportation), service delivery and amenities, safety, jobs, business districts, taxes, the importance of perpetual learning about the best practices and ideas coming out of different places, listening to what people are saying, and balancing questions about the future with questions about the present. |
