Description Jewish Businesses in Western North Carolina was a project derived from the ingenuity of the organization History @ Hand, whose research into the history of Jewish families in western North Carolina has enriched the cultural awareness of Jewish life across the region and a deeper understanding into the history of Asheville. The collection includes interviews with various Jewish business owners, former business owners, and their families who owned or still own businesses in downtown Asheville. A significant portion of the collection was compiled by History @ Hand for an outdoor exhibit in downtown Asheville entitled "The Family Store: A History of Jewish Businesses in Downtown Asheville, 1880-1990.

The following information is taken from the brochure of the exhibit:

"The Family Store: A History of Jewish Businesses in Downtown Asheville, 1880-1990 is a twelve-station exhibit     located at sites around downtown where former Jewish businesses used to thrive. It showcases a time when all downtowns were destinations of purpose, providing the items necessary for daily life, from groceries to clothing to restaurants. During the majority of this period, downtown Asheville was the shopping hub of Western North Carolina.

The Family Store acknowledges 110 years of undocumented history by revealing the presence, the abundance (more than 400) and the importance of downtown Asheville's Jewish businesses. These merchants laid the groundwork, both physical and commercial, for downtown Asheville, to be the arts and tourism destination it is today."

The collection includes: Twenty-two interviews, available in DVD or VHS format, and their transcripts.
