Description |
Helen Benninga shares her various experiences of escaping from Holland, living in London during World War II, and how she ended up in Asheville and her time as a member of the local Jewish community, in particular within the Beth Israel Synagogue. Of particular interest is her brief account of her two-years spent in an internment camp run by the Japanese in West Australia. She discusses at length the advantages and disadvantages of living in Israel as opposed to America. Many people referenced in her account can be located in photographs in the Congregation Beth Israel manuscript. |
