Description |
Sidney Schochet begins his oral history by describing his family history in brief and then plunging into a detailed account of the Jewish business community in Asheville during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He then goes on to discuss a variety of rabbis that he had experiences with in Asheville. Mr. Schochet then describes how and why the orthodox and reform communities were split. William Dudley Pelley is then discussed, a subject on which Mr. Schochet has much first-hand experience. He also has a unique perspective on Thomas Wolfe's role and relation to not just the Jewish community, but Asheville as a whole. The Great Depression as it affected Asheville is also discussed. |
