Biography Mr. Jarrett was born and raised in Catawba County, North Carolina.   He was introduced to car racing  with the introduction of the Hickory Speedway.  Because he had half-interest in a car, he raced his first race as the first driver at the Speedway.  He continued to race, winning the NASCAR championship in 1961.  Despite retiring as a driver in 1978, he remains the all-time leader in race wins for Ford at the top level of stock-car racing.  [Feb. 5, 2008, www.nascar.com/2008]
