Biography

John Baxter was born in Chunn's Cove, the grandson of slaves.  In New York City he studied automobile repair and returned to Asheville in the 1950's to open Baxter's Transmission Service.

Over the years, Baxter taped and interviewed many black musicians who performed in Asheville.  In the 1970's, he was active in the campaign to save and to revitalize the YMI Cultural Center.
