This oral history interview describes the experiences of Rev. Black in rural churches at a time when the pastor was not paid a salary. He made his living outside of the church. Biography

Mr. Black was born on May 16, 1893, in Yancey County, near Burnsville, North Carolina. He spent his boyhood on a large farm at Windom, three miles from Burnsville. He made a public announcement of his intention to enter the ministry in 1924, as was the custom in his denomination. He was ordained as a minister in the Missionary Baptist Church in 1929.
