This oral history interview describes the experiences of Rev. Black in rural churches at a time when the pastor was not paid a salary. He made his living outside of the church. The interview reveals the difficulties experienced by an innovative minister in trying to broaden his fields of service to the church.

Biography

Mr. Black was born on May 16, 1893, in Yancey County, near Burnsville, North Carolina. He spent his boyhood on a large farm at Windom, three miles from Burnsville. He made a public announcement of his intention to enter the ministry in 1924, as was the custom in his denomination. He was ordained as a minister in the Missionary Baptist Church in 1929.
