Description

Dorothy Joynes created her project, The Voices of Asheville Oral History Collection, in order to obtain a broader understanding of the people and history of Western North Carolina.  The Voices of Asheville Collection is found at University of North Carolina at Asheville, Ramsey Library, Special Collections. Thirteen percent of the collection is with African-Americans  from Asheville. Geographically, Joynes tried to "cover the areas from Dula Springs to Hickory Nut Gap, from West Asheville to Black Mountain". (Asheville Citizen Times, April 28, 1996)  20 manuscript cartons contain the collection.

Biography

Dorothy Joynes referred to herself as a professional Oral Historian.  She began interviewing people when she first started volunteering at the Santa Barbara Historical Society in 1984.  In 1990, Joynes and her husband moved to Asheville, NC and she began interviewing in 1991, with the goal of completing 150 interviews. Several aspects of this area's history intrigued her, such as the effects of the Depression, the TB epidemic, the two World Wars, racial issues and changes in attitudes over the years. In 1996, Joynes donated her collection of Asheville-area interview to Special Collection, Ramsey Library, UNCA. By 1999, Dorothy Joynes completed 199 Oral Histories.
