5 William Jennings Bryan, at center of photograph. Bryan, a Nebraska lawyer, ran for President of the United States three times. He lost three times. For a brief seven years Bryan kept a home in Asheville on the corner of Kimberly and Evelyn [Evelyn street is named for the daughter of E.W. Grove and was the wife of Fred Seely] streets. President Woodrow Wilson called him into service as his Secretary of State.  Perhaps his most memorable role was that of lawyer in the famous Scopes Monkey Trial that occurred in 1925 when Bryan defended his distaste for the theory of evolution. He died just five days after losing the trial.
