Originally buildt in the seventeenth century, the Cathedral of the Mother of God of Kazan was the first of Moscow's churches to be restored. Originally constructed to honor of the Kazanskaya Icon, that reportedly saved Russia from the invasion of Poles and Lithuanians which took place in 1612. Also dedicated to the  memory of  Russian soldiers who fell in battle.
The original 300 year old cathedral was blown up in 1936 and the site remained vacant for many years with various business located there. The decision to restore the cathedral came in 1990 by the Moscow City Council. His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II laid the foundation stone, and three years later the same Patriarch Alexy II  re-consecrated the newly-built cathedral.

  DSCN3543 The Monument to Peter the Great in the Moscova River. Dedicated for  the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. A relatively new sculpture, it was created in 1997 by the present Head of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts Zurab Tseretely.  This is not one of the Moscovites favorite scultptures and the story goes it was offered to St. Petersburg and they turned it down.  DSCN3543.JPG (36322 bytes)
