Francophone Language & Literature

The Francophone World

In 1880, le géographe français Onésisme Reclus (1837-1916) invente le terme " francophonie " pour définir l'ensemble des personnes et des pays utilisant le français à des titres divers.

La Francophonie - Part of Le Ministère des Affaires Étrangères page, which is part of France Diplomatie. Much of the site is available in English or French. A wealth of concise information and selected links to information may be searched such as Francophone radio and television, country specific francophone interests. A search for "Francophone world" will yield numerous Francophone associations, links, maps and brief historical information.

Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie - Historical and current information on Francophone countries, language, and literature. In particular, see Sites Officiel des Etats et gouvernements membres de la Francophonie, which has links for:

Searching the library catalog

Keyword searches

Start by searching for the name of a country or region and french
You may also use francophone as one of your keywords:

francophone
(louisiana or cajun) and (french or linguistics)
maghreb french
caribbean and (french or francophone)
africa french
haiti french

If you get too many items, focus the search by adding one of the following words:

literature
drama
fiction
poetry
linguistics
criticism
biography
bibliography
women
decolonization

and so on...

For example:

north africa french literature
quebec french poetry

If a word has more than one ending, type an asterisk (*) to retrieve all variant forms of the word:

haiti* poetry is the same as (haiti or haitian) and poetry

To find criticism of an author's works, use the name and the word criticism:

ousmane sembene criticism

Tip: When you find a good book on your topic, look at the subjects listed in the catalog record and click on any that seem pertinent to your research.

Subject searches

Unfortunately, "francophone" is not a subject heading, so you cannot use it in a Subject Search. Therefore, to find all library materials about francophone literature, you will need to use terms that are found in official Library of Congress subject headings:

african literature french
caribbean literature french
and so on...

If you don't know which subject headings would be good for your topic, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings at the Reference Desk, also known as "Big Red Books." Experiment. If you don't find anything, do a keyword search first and then click on subject headings in the catalog records of books that are relevant to your research.
