Abstract:

Web-based calendars are popular and widely useful. However, creating a custom calendar for your own Web-site or an office Intranet is non-trivial! How would you go about building such a calendar? There are several different ways you can do this. This tutorial explains how to build a web-based calendar using modern, available, open source (free) technology.
The instructions for installing a Web-based calendar are written for three audiences based upon computer experience. The tutorial instructions are written for the novice (non programmer) computer user. The lab instructions are designed for the computer user that has a little more expertise but is also a non-programmer. The third audience is for the programmer.
The project process was to implement a calendar and create the instructions. In the development process, careful thought was given to the ease of implementation for the installer. Likewise, the design phase emphasized simplicity for the person actually using the calendar. Then the instructions were tested with two types of users. Both users were successful installing, using the calendar, and provided valuable feedback for enhancements (which have now been incorporated).
