Background:

A small group of published and un-published poets/writers that I am acquainted with desire to receive further recognition of their work, help one another progress in their collective writing careers, and hopefully get more work published by creating an identity through strength in numbers via an online presence.

Description:

The site, enchantedpoetess.com, will be interfaced with a database containing all their works to date and have the capability to have new material added once the user has logged into the site as well as a forum area were material can be viewed by anyone who visits the site and commented upon by anyone who is registered. The forum will be searchable by author, category, date, and keyword searches. To implement the site I have setup an apache webserver, tomcat server, MySQL database server, mail server, ftp server, and telnet server, as well as Java, PHP, and Ant modules. Also, I used CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to a minor extent in an effort to streamline formatting of the presented information. To interface with the database and allow content to be viewable and searchable I used java servlet technology and the login scripts were handled through PHP. The mail server further solidifies the group?s online presence by allowing them to send and receive mail from their own domain. The ftp and telnet servers were setup so that remote administration of the website files and the MySQL database would be possible.

Conclusion:

I have been able to implement said solution per client request and have learned a great deal in the process. I have elaborated upon knowledge gained about java servlet technology and MySQL database administration gleaned from such UNCA CSCI classes as Database Management and Information Retrieval. I have also applied some of the techniques and ideas from Systems Analysis and Design Methods in my quest to distinguish my user?s needs and help fulfill those needs. The only drawback the site has is that it cannot be graphically intensive or have any multimedia content due to the cap on my upstream connection. Currently the site is still hosted from my domicile, but the group is looking into having it transferred to a commercial hosting company that will have a higher bandwidth rating so that the site may grow and prosper.
