Historical Note	In June of 1969, all property of Asheville-Biltmore College was conveyed to the University of North Carolina, and for the next three years there was no separate UNCA Board of Trustees. Decisions during that period were made by the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University system. In 1972 North Carolina's University system was expanded to include sixteen campuses. At that time the Board of Governors replaced the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University. Separate boards of trustees were re-established for the constituent institutions. The UNCA Board of Trustees currently consists of thirteen members, eight of whom are elected by the Board of Governors of the UNC system and four of whom are appointed by the Governor, with the UNCA student body president serving as an ex-officio member. Members serve either two-year or four-year terms. The Board of Trustees is advisory both to the UNCA Chancellor and to the UNC Board of Governors. It holds extensive powers over academic and other operations of the institution as delegated by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. These documents record the activity of the UNCA Board of Trustees over the duration of the history of the institution.
Scope and Content	Materials in this collection date from 1945, when UNCA's predecessor Asheville-Biltmore College was a two-year junior college. Additions to this collection are on-going and are composed primarily of the minutes of meetings of the UNCA Board of Trustees. Also included are copies of documents related to the business conducted at these meetings. Among the documents are correspondence, budget projections, enrollment figures, personnel documents, Board of Trustee resolutions, documentation of the acquisition and transfer of property, decisions about campus building construction, repair and renovation, a legal document relating to non-compliance of the state of North Carolina with section 602 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and copies of policy documents requiring Board of Trustee approval, such as the UNCA Long Range Plan, and Faculty Tenure Policy.

After becoming part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina in 1969, UNCA was governed by the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University until 1972, when the UNC Board of Trustees became the UNC Board of Governors, and the member campuses reinstated their individual boards of trustees.
