| Biography | An educator and administrator in Buncombe
County Schools, William H. Jones is best known for his roll as the first
chief executive officer for Buncombe County Junior College, which would
eventually become the University of North Carolina- Asheville. In
1927, Jones was slated to become principle of the new Biltmore High
School; however, A.C. Reynolds, the current superintendent of schools,
changed Jones' title to superintendent of Biltmore schools, a move which
placed Jones in charge of Biltmore Elementary School, Biltmore High
School, and the soon-to-be completed Buncombe Country Junior High
School. During Jones's tenure, Buncombe County Junior College was
renamed Biltmore Junior College in 1930. Jones remained as superintendent until 1932. [Source: Highsmith, William Edward. The University of North Carolina at Asheville: the First Sixty Years, Asheville: The University of North Carolina at Asheville, 1991.] |
| Series | Only a small number of records have survived from the early days of the Biltmore Schools or Buncombe County Junior College. Most of the files created during the years Jones was Superintendent were probably lost in the many institutional transitions or were retained by the Buncombe County Public Schools System. |
