| Biography | At the inception of Buncombe Country Junior
College in 1927, Alonzo Carlton Reynolds was superintendent of schools,
a position the county school board had appointed him to in April 1926.
Previously, Reynolds had worked as superintendent of Buncombe County
schools and president of Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School.
Reynolds left his position as superintendent in 1933 to become president
of Biltmore Junior College. Though he was generally well-liked by
both student and faculty, Reynolds found himself in conflict with many
students over minor rules, particularly the issue of school dances.
The students wanted to instate a school formal, but Reynolds believed that
dances would cause sexual tension and, as a result, immorality. This
conflict led to a strike by about 75 students, but Reynolds held his
position prohibiting school-sponsored dances.
As president, Reynolds recognized the need for an outside group to hold legal responsibility for the school and to connect the community to the faculty and administrators of the Junior College. In 1934, Reynolds formed a board of trustees, to which he turned over all legal authority for the college. The college was named Biltmore College. In 1936, the city school board agreed to accept Buncombe County Junior College into the city school system and changed the school's name to Asheville-Biltmore College, though it was popularly referred to as Biltmore College. Also in 1936, Reynolds announced that he would resign as soon as the Asheville City School Board could assume responsibility for the management of the college. |
