Officers Files. Includes records created and collected by Highsmith, President of Asheville-Biltmore College (1962-1969) and later, Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville (1969-1984). Under the control of the Asheville City School Board, the Asheville-Biltmore College persisted until 1969 when it became one of the six campuses of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. In 1961 the campus was moved from Town Mountain to its present location in North Asheville. In that same year the first black student was enrolled in the institution. In 1963 the institution became a state supported senior college and created an independent Board of Trustees. These turbulent years of transition were important for setting the course of the institution and Highsmith, more than any other chief executive officer, gave shape to the present institution, the University of North Carolina at Asheville. |
