On plastic sleeve: Four hundred of the most distinguished men of the South gathered on Saturday night, July 12, 1913, as Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan (not pictured) marked the official opening of the 156-room hotel by proclaiming it was 'built for the ages.' (S.H. Research Center)."

Another annotation: "Asheville's Grove Park Inn was officially opened on July 12, 1913, with a formal banquet attended by 450 men of city, state, and national distinction. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan delivered the grand opening address. The local newspaper gave this account: "'a gastronomical and intellectual feast characterized the opening of the magnificent new hostelry, the finest in the world. It stands today as it will stand for all time -a marvel of the builder's art, a triumph of architectural skill."'"
