A Land of Delight

Situated in the mountains of Western North Carolina is a section of country, easy of access, which for natural scenic beauty surpasses anything on the continent, no matter where located. Here nature has been lavish with all that makes up those scenic wonders that charm and thrill. Mountain peaks almost without number rise to lofty heights, mammoth gorges cut their way between these peaks, carrying with them dashing, sparkling streams, forming numerous waterfalls of rare beauty and fascination. With an altitude varying from 2,250 to 5,000 feet, the climate is mild and invigorating, the air is pure, dry and bracing, and the water flowing from the mountain streams is pure and health giving. By this development of The Beautiful Sapphire Country the public is now given an opportunity to enjoy the beauties of nature, as well as the benefits of health-giving altitude, bracing air, and dry and mild climate, which heretofore have been only within the reach of those with unlimited means. To do justice to the scenic beauty of The Beautiful Sapphire Country is impossible. The camera itself can give only an inadequate idea of the grandeur of nature here so lavishly bestowed, the views here presented being from actual photographs. Tourists who have visited Switzerland to see its world-renowned mountain peaks and lakes famous alike in song and story, find in Beautiful Toxaway, with its diversity of scenery, a rival of whose existence they had not dreamed.

An Ideal Resort, Summer and Winter.

The Beautiful Sapphire Country is truly a resort with unlimited attractions, and the tourist and pleasure seeker can spend an indefinite time here with never a dull moment. The entertainment and the points of interest are so numerous and varied that there is no possibility of monotony, which is so common to most resorts after a few days' stay. There are interesting trips without number to the many mountain summits, from which the views are indescribable. More than a hundred waterfalls, some with a descent of over three hundred feet, add their charm to the natural beauty of the surroundings, and invite the visitor to devote much of his time to wholesome outdoor life. All points of interest are easily reached by well constructed roads or horseback trails. Because of the altitude, The Beautiful Sapphire Country is primarily a summer resort, and for this same reason, and also because it is situated on the southern slopes of the mountains it is also a most attractive winter resort, which places it in great favor with those who wish to avoid the severe climate of the North. The air is pure, dry and bracing, the climate is mild, and the elegant Toxaway Inn is open the year round, and is a most delightful place for those who desire to come South before the opening of the Florida Season, and stop en route North after they have completed their stay in the extreme South. Sapphire Inn is also open the year round. To this wonderland of nature the hand of man has added only those conveniences and luxuries necessary to make more enjoyable and accessible the natural beauties. Magnificent hotels have been built, located most advantageously at the different points of interest; eighty-five miles of well constructed mountain roads are maintained in addition to as many more of bridle paths, making accessible the mountain summits from which are views indescribable. Three magnificent lakes, one of them about two thousand acres in area, add to the charm of the moun tainous country the fascination of the water and the delights of bathing and boating.

The Toxaway System of Hotels

Ideal in its conception and highly successful in operation, being composed of five thoroughly modern hotels located at convenient intervals at the most attractive and advantageous points. At Brevard, which is the gateway to The Beautiful Sapphire Country, is the homelike Franklin Inn. At the terminus of the railway, twenty-one miles west of Brevard, is the beautiful and luxurious Toxaway Inn, with accommodations for 400 guests. Eight miles further, reached by private conveyance, is Sapphire Inn, on Mount Sapphire, while two miles beyond is Fairfield Inn, on Lake Fairfield. The Lodge on the summit of Mount Toxaway is at an altitude of about 5,000 feet. These hotels are thoroughly modern, equipped with all conveniences, and offer accommodations suited to the various tastes of pleasure seekers, either with all the luxuries of a fashionable inn, or the thoroughly comfortable accommodations of the less pretentious hotels. Toxaway Inn and Sapphire Inn are open the year round, while the other hotels are open only during the summer season.

Beautiful Toxaway Inn.—To accommodate those tourists who desire to take advantage of this unsurpassed climate of the South before the opening of the Florida Season, and as well those who do not wish to return North until late in the spring, Toxaway Inn is now kept open all the year. It is an elegant, thoroughly modern structure, equipped with everything for the comfort and convenience of its guests, such as elevators, steam heat, electric lights, open, sanitary, nickeled plumbing, etc. The rooms are large and light, each one commanding beautiful views of mountain or lake scenery, and arranged singly or en suite. There are more than one hundred private baths. The hotel is admirably located, immediately upon the shore of Lake Toxaway, with a Southern exposure, and nestled at the foot of the mountains which protect it from the North and West. In furnishings, appointments and service, it easily ranks with the most noted resort hotels of America.

In touch with the world.—Although there is a reposeful quietude in the surroundings here, where one is so close to nature, that contrasts sharply with the noise and hurry of the busy commercial world, the guests of these hotels are in immediate communication with their homes and business, there being a Western Union wire, as well as long distance telephone connection, at Toxaway Inn.

The Sportsman's Paradise

A veritable paradise for the sportsman is The Beautiful Sapphire Country. The game preserve, consisting of 28,000 acres, is well protected and abounds with ruffed grouse, wild turkey and deer, with some bear and quail, and also ducks on the lakes.

On account of its altitude and climate The Sapphire Country is an unequalled health resort, the pure dry air being a specific for asthma, hay fever and bronchial troubles. Persons suffering from tuberculosis will not be received at any of the hotels of the system. The many out-door attractions offer such wholesome exercise that the tourist is invigorated and strengthened while enjoying the unequalled attractions.

The Charming Lakes.—Among the charming features of this country, so rich in scenic wonders, are three beautiful lakes, whose placid silvery waters add a majestic peacefulness to the surroundings. They are Lake Toxaway, Lake Fairfield and Lake Sapphire. Each of these lakes has a peculiar beauty and charm of situation, and appeals strongly to those who appreciate completeness of detail which nature has here so amply provided. Lake Toxaway, which covers an area of nearly two thousand acres, and has a shoreline of more than fifteen miles, is the first in size and importance. A complete flotilla of pleasure craft, both row-boats and launches, is maintained at each lake for the pleasure of the guests, whose comfort and enjoyment is the especial care of the management.

"Overhills of Ottaray" Golf Links

Golf—The golf course, Toxaway Inn, Lake Toxaway, N. C., comprises nine holes, is on a rolling country that seems to have been especially prepared by nature for the sport, natural hazards and bunkers, surrounded by beautiful forests and mountains. The grounds can be reached from Toxaway Inn, either by launch, row boat or carriage, by walking or on horseback. They are shielded from the north winds, and have a delightful southern exposure and a splendid view of the mountains. Those devoted to this sport will find the course all that is to be desired, and thoroughly in keeping with the great attractiveness of The Beautiful Sapphire Country and splendid Toxaway Inn. In these mountains, rich in Indian lore, it is appropriate that Indian names, having fitting meanings, be applied to the course as a whole, and to the distances individually.

The Attractions

Few resorts can offer such a variety of entertainment to its guests as is found here. The magnificent lakes afford boating, bathing and fishing. There are excellent tennis courts, bowling alleys, billiard and pool tables. The sportsman will find exceptional opportunities with both rod and gun. To the golf devote, the excellent nine-hole links, which are maintained in first-class condition, will be found a source of delight. A well-equipped livery enables one to enjoy the many magnificent drives over the excellent mountain roads, while horseback riding is ever popular over the eighty miles of bridle paths. Excellent music by a first-class orchestra makes the evenings enjoyable and fills the beautiful music room with those who are fond of the dance.

A point that is of great importance is the freedom of the region from mosquitoes, black flies and other noxious insects. This will be appreciated by the fisherman as well as those who wish to remain close to the hotels. The great Southern Railway renders access easy, and at any of the ticket offices full information can be had, or persons wishing same can have all questions fully answered by writing the managers of the different hotels.

The cuisine is unsurpassed, fresh vegetables being furnished daily from a large farm by the management, while a hundred Jerseys supply milk and butter of the best quality. The mountain streams abound in fish and the abundance of game easily obtained provides unusual delicacies.
